Has Your Blog Inspired Anyone?

I recently got an email (via this blog’s contact form) that literally blew me away:

Hi there! I have been reading your blog since last year and I just chanced upon your old post where you shared that you just graduated at 24. Wow. Pretty inspiring. Thanks for sharing that. I am currently having troubles finishing. I am 8 subjects away from that diploma and I feel energized after reading your post. I feel like enrolling now :)

This gracious reader was talking about Fool for Five’s first post, where I explained why it took me 8 years to finish college, and how I almost gave up on the university life completely.

It’s always nice to see a blog affect someone else positively. Who knows? This could easily be the defining moment of my blogging for this year.

To dear XXXX, stick with it man (or woman). You’re almost there! Let me tell you, few things will match what you feel as you walk down the aisle to Pomp and Circumstance, towards the stage to receive that mock diploma.

I’ve heard my blog has inspired certain people to go pick up a dictionary…

That is so sweet, Rico. It’s nice to see you blogging again :)
And I can’t really say I’ve inspired anyone, although I like to think I make people run to their dictionaries too.

last year, i had a summer job at dotPH as a marketing intern. it basically involves a lot of bloghopping and commenting and inviting people to visit my own blog. there was this one woman’s blog post that stopped me dead though, in the middle of my rather sensitizing job.

she talked about how she had to cut expenses because the money was tight. she had to give up a lot of things just to make ends meet. this is normal, i guess, with the economy we’ve been having, but i haven’t heard anyone express the desolation and desperation as well as this woman did. i felt myself sympathizing with her, and this is rare. she was a total stranger but i felt her pain. i left a comment telling her that i thought she was a strong woman, writing about it and being levelheaded and practical in solving her problem. she could do it.

one year after, i blogged about how much i wanted to quit college so i can get a life, and this woman commented and said that she remembered me from my comment a year ago, how it made her feel better. i know this isnt really about my blog inspiring someone, but its more like two strangers inspiring each other through blogging.

i dont know her real name, but i wont forget her.

somehow, every now and then, i receive some messages saying the same, and it feels food to be able to share what we write with other people, and inspire them.

    liz,

this experience of yours sounds like a good plot for a movie.
