Who Did Millie Garfield Date During the 1950s?

From Blaugh, I came across this wonderful post by Millie Garfield, an 81-year-old blogger (but she isn’t the oldest!). She talks about enjoying a “nice date” in the 1950s (she was in her late-20s) with a guy who wanted to impress her, bringing her to some posh resto. Problem was, when the check came, he didn’t have enough money. Luckily though, the manager was understanding, and willing to let the guy pay later.

That’s not all. Millie also remembers her date “expressing his strong feelings [that] someday the United States would land a man on the moon.” Here’s a pic of the him, taken on 1956:

Remember, this was around 1954! Sputnik hadn’t been launched yet. So who was this dreamer? Let’s fast forward a few years:

He’s Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon. He made history on July 20, 1969, 15 years after his date with Millie. A great story of someone realizing his dream, don’t you think?

Update: Whoops! I am mistaken! :(

Hey, the Statler hotel … :)
That’s a wonderful story, Rico. It makes for a slightly more interesting “bad first date” story for the grandkids, anyways :P

Yeah, Statler as in my fellow Nektros commentator. :)
Haha, I can imagine! “Yes kids, I forgot to bring enough money to a date…then I was the first man on the moon 15 years later.”

So I was browsing Millie’s site, and I noticed the Blaugh cartoon in her sidebar - I was wondering who it was referring to when I first saw it.

I learn something new here every day :)

    It’s called Google, you knife-wielding 18-year-old Aussie you. ;)

But, glad to be of service. Honestly, was also wondering who Millie Garfield was when I saw the Blaugh. :)
