How Can Images Make Your Site More Accessible to People?

Here’s a quick tip that, at the very least, makes information on your site easy to find. It’s short, sweet, and best of all, requires no programming skills whatsoever!

When you upload an image to your website, the HTML used to display it probably looks something like this, especially if you’ve taken them from your digicam:

<img src=”http://yoursite.com/IMG_1085.jpg” />

Before uploading the image, you should rename it to something more descriptive. For example, if I’m uploading a picture of Filipinos chocolate (quite popular in Spain I hear):

filipinos-chocolate.JPG

I should rename it to “Filipinos-Chocolate.jpg” or something similar. So the HTML rendering this image would be:

<img src=”http://yoursite.com/Filipinos-Chocolate.jpg” />

Note that I used a dash, instead of using spaces or bunching the words together. Keeping the words separate helps search engines distinguish them, so that they know you’re talking about Filipinos Chocolate, not FilipinosChocolate, while avoiding spaces helps make your site compatible with widely-used browsers.

Naming images properly helps people locate what they’re looking for. Which makes browsing through your site a more easy and enjoyable experience. A great way to keep the visitors coming back.
